Is essential for spiritual growth in my opinion. However you chose to do it, you will find great benefit in the practice of this art.
Research has shown that meditation is a safe and simple way to balance your physical, emotional, and mental state and its many values have been known and practiced for thousands of years.
More and more doctors promote the benefits of meditation to cure many stress related illnesses.
When adrenaline and other hormones are released from the adrenal glands the pulse races, blood pressure increases, our breathing becomes faster and the blood flow to the muscles increases. If we are in extreme danger these reactions are of great assistance and gain to us. We have inherited this survival response from our ancestors who faced many life threatening situations every day, but we find ourselves in this physical condition due to ongoing stresses and hassles of modern living. Prolonged time in this state can be harmful to our health causing heart disease and other illnesses.
Meditation can be used for deep relaxation to counter this problem. Lowering our heart rate and relaxin
Some of the benefits of meditation are:-
Reduces anxiety attacks as it lowers the levels of blood lactate.
Builds self confidence.
Increases serotonin which influences moods and behaviour. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, headaches and insomnia.
Enhances energy, strength and vigour.
Helps keep blood pressure normal
Reduces stress and tension
Creates a state of deep relaxation and general feeling of wellbeing
Helps with P.M.T.
Increases concentration and strengthens the mind
Helps reduce heart disease
Helps with weight loss
In spiritual terms meditation can help with experiencing higher levels of consciousness and spirituality, and achieving self-realization. The process of meditation is a valuable tool in becoming aware of yourself and exploring spirituality.
You may meditate to meet your spirit guide or to contact loved ones that have passed away. Meditation can open a door into a limitless reality. As you develop many wonderful things may happen. The results may not be instant but visions may well come.
Then, there are sometimes visions. Wild, distorted faces. Anger, pain, loss and despair all showing itself to you. You think, "This is what people say is good for me?" Roll with it. It is merely a stage and will end as you continue your practice of meditation. It might take a week or more, but it will stop.
The key is the commitment. Don't give up. So you miss a day or two. Get right back on again. You'll find some resistance. So, pick a better time to do this. 4:45 in the afternoon, right before dinnertime, when everybody is just getting home from work, when your neighbor hasn't seen you all day and wants to talk, when Jerry Springer is on and people in your family want to watch television? Maybe not such a good time. Perhaps you could arrange to awaken an hour earlier in the morning. Or, come bedtime, set aside 45 minutes to sit quietly in another room.
You might find you cannot sustain a connection to meditation, that you seem to drift between a quiet place and the noisy thinktank of your mind. Imagine your consciousness to be a small child walking beside you. The idea is to remain on the path and the child will wander, their attention caught by any little thing. Your job, as the responsible adult is to gently take the child's hand, over and over again, as patiently as you can be, and bring them back to the path again. So, your mind wanders and you begin to think about all the things at work you want to do. Have by your side a pen and paper, break away and back into the room and write down whatever it is that occurred to you. Go back to meditating. What you've done is in writing down these things assured your subconscious that you will not forget and have made a pact of sorts to attend to business at the next convenient opportunity. Go back to meditating, gently. Just gently fall back into it.
After awhile the mental and physical disturbances will become less and less frequent as you become more and more accustomed to being in a meditative state.
You may find that you 'cant meditate' to start with but there are many different methods so try a different one.
You may find that you do not have time but try to be creative and squeeze a bit of time in - it is worth it. Even a short regular meditation will bring spiritual and self growth.
